#5DadsGoWild

This weekend I’m going camping.

Trust me, as I write that out and hear myself say it, I realize how crazy of an idea this really was. I’m going out into the wild with four other BC-based Dad bloggers and social media influencers for a weekend of fun, adventures, discussions, bonding, content creation and camping. We’re calling it: #5DadsGoWild

Do you want to know the craziest thing that I can’t even make up?!? The last camping trip I was on was in 1998 with four of my best guy friends from high school - all of whom are Dads now! #5HighSchoolFriendsGoWild

One of my friends, Marshall was from South Korea and had NEVER gone camping before. From that feeble attempt when we were 16 years old, he fell in love with it and has now become an avid camper in South Korea and worldwide! He was even interviewed on one of South Koreas biggest TV channels a couple years ago and showed pictures (which I didn’t know even existed) of our first camping trip. He has gone on to create quite the Instagram account: @kimscampinglife

Now 20 years later, I’m trying it again. I don’t have a tent. I don’t know how to start a fire. I don’t like being damp and cold. I rely on WiFi and my phone charger far too much. A hot shower and a toilet that flushes is an essential part of my day, and knowing there is a king size bed with memory foam mattress waiting for me, is sometimes all that gets me through my day,

But I crave adventure. I crave friendship. I need to get out. I need a weekend off from changing diapers. I want to learn new skills – both content creating as well as survival. And besides this is exactly why we formed Parenting 101 – to reassemble “the village” that was automatically built into culture decades ago with neighborhood support, group connections, and even religious affiliations that rarely form organically anymore.

And if this goes well, maybe next year they will come “camping” with me at Tomorrowland!

But the fact remains that I am going to be so far removed from my element here, I’m legitimately scared of the outcome; and I don’t want to ruin any of the experience for the other Dads joining me.

I’m assuming I won’t ruin anything for Michael Kwan representing @BeyondTheRhetoric – as he too has never gone camping before… or rather, his last camping trip was in Grade 8 similar to me. The two of us might actually connect due to this fact.

@StephenFung claims he is going to start a new trend on Instagram with his Hot Pot for Camping. And if that doesn’t work, he has been talking non-stop about throwing knives. At what or who, I don’t know. Thus, I’m scared of Stephen.

James R.C. Smith, better known as the SocialDad.ca is our leader… the visionary… the social media specialist. I don’t know what to make of him yet. His social media presence intimidates me, but I’m not sure if faced with a bear, he would know what to do. Neither do I, but in some ways that makes me feel better about my chances of survival.

Then my pick in the office pool for greatest chance of survival is Stacey Robinsmith, living life as: @ADadInTheBurbs. He looks the part, talks the part and just projects this air of confidence when talking about our trip. I just can’t predict what he’s going to do if I accidentally cause his biscuits to burn!

So, there you have it. While I am the most ill prepared and least experienced of the 5 dads heading out into the wild, this trip is likely going to be one of the highlights of my year, guaranteeing to provide stories, pictures and content for months to come! Will I survive? Time will tell. Do you have advice? Message me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram at @Parenting101
